Getting Girls to Become Engineers through the Power of Play
An inspiring toy company
called GoldieBlox has set out to challenge the current trend where only 11
percent of the world’s engineers are female. According to GoldiBlox, a key
opportunity to entice young girls into the engineering field of thought and
study is lost as early as 8 and they are determined to change the current
statistics through the power of play.
Construction toys help children develop an interest in science,
technology, engineering and math, but
historically have been geared towards only boys. The company is on a quest to
disrupt the pink aisle and inspire the future generation of female engineers.
The company’s founder and CEO, Debbie Sterling, has committed herself to get
girls building by tapping into their verbal, engineering, and spatial skills as
well as their confidence in problem-solving with a toy that introduces girls to
the joy of engineering at a young age. They have come up with an ingenious and
clever commercial showcasing the creation of three little girls of a Rube
Goldberg machine created with an eclectic combination of household items and
set to the beat of a Beastie Boy’s song.
