When there is nothing in particular to work on during the day I usually end up surfing through YouTube. No, I’m not spending my time at work surfing through Geek Week, but I am looking through Solid Edge tutorials. As an intern, when it comes to deciding what to model, my imagination usually fails me and when this happens, I usually get inspiration from YouTube. For example, I once saw someone surfacing a Chevy Camaro I knew I had to try it since I love classic muscle cars (particularly first generation Camaros). The problem was the video was just a run through and didn’t have a step by step plan. And, since I think I’m an incredible genius and can figure anything out, I decided that I would figure it out as I went along. Please join my inspired attempt in surfacing a Camaro.
- 0-15 Minutes : I stare at the blueprints on Solid Edge and try to figure out how to make 3D drawings out of 2D pictures.
- 15-25 Minutes: I go on Google and try to find some help online (perhaps a step by step tutorial?) I don’t find any.
- 25-30 Minutes: My boss walks by my computer and sees what I’m trying to do, points it out to a Saratech engineer and they both go on to respectfully poke fun for starting something so complicated. They then gently suggest I start on something easier until I fully understand surfacing.
- 30-35 Minutes: I decide I’m too stubborn for an easier task and continue to attempt to surface a Camaro.
- 3 Weeks Later: It has been three weeks since I stubbornly decided to start this project (one week of which I spent at home studying for finals and the other sitting through a Solid Edge class taught by a fellow co-worker) and I am still not even remotely close to knowing what I am doing. While I did get some of the hood and side doors done, with some assistance, I am still struggling to finish the rest. So wish me farewell, lots of good luck, and if anyone can provide some suggestions, I welcome those as well. For the time being, this concludes my stubborn journey through surfacing, may you be inspired to venture into the unknown as well!
