Break Out of Your Box!
I used to have an LG “Lollipop” phone. My LG phone was a flip phone that allowed me to make phone calls and send text messages. It would even light up in a way that resembled a “Lollipop”, thus the nickname. I liked to use that phone because it was simple, did everything I wanted it to do, didn’t cost very much, and most importantly I knew how to use it! The cell phone store kept insisting that I upgrade to a new phone, but I refused. One day at work my boss decided to promote me and offered me a company phone. I was afraid that it would be a smart phone because, even though they were “cool” phones, I didn’t know how to use one.
Several days later, I was sitting at my cubicle as one of my co-workers walked up with a big brown box. She tore the box open and presented to me my brand new iPhone 4S. At that moment, I knew I would have to leave my comfort zone, put aside my “Lollipop” phone and learn to use an iPhone.
A couple of weeks later, as I was on a traveling assignment, I found myself depending on my iPhone, especially to find my way around town. Eventually, I got used to the phone and I learned how to use all of its functions. I began to wonder if I could I go back to my old phone. I decided that if I ever needed to I could use my old “Lollipop” phone, but I would probably miss some of the luxuries I was starting to rely on.
How many of us reach a point in our lives when we have to leave behind something and embrace something else? One time, a customer came in for a Solid Edge training class (Monday – Thursday). He explained that he has used a handful of different CAD tools, but never Solid Edge. He told me that he needed to know Solid Edge for an assignment that was due that Friday! After four days of training, questions and practicing, the customer was starting to understand Solid Edge. The following week, I got a call from him and he told me that he met his deadline!
As difficult as it can be to accept change and try new things, sometimes we must do so otherwise we could find ourselves in a not so better off state. If I had stayed with my old phone, I would have been without so many new phone features that have helped me immensely.
