Adding a True Third Dimension to CAD/CAE

We have relied on mice and keyboards as input systems for so long that it is difficult to imagine using anything else to control a computer.  But there are emerging technologies that may change the way we interact with computers forever.  The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that allows people to experience computer software in a fully three dimensional way.  It provides the user with a sense of depth using a stereoscopic display, or a display that has two slightly offset images, one for each eye.   For humans, this makes the graphics that are displayed seem “real” (we are so rooted in three dimensional space that anything that is 3D our minds consider real).

Imagine the impact this sort of technology would have on CAD and CAE applications.  In these fields, the graphics we see on our computer screens will one day be physical parts, so treating them as real objects throughout the entire process makes more sense than treating the CAD/CAE data as imaginary objects.  I also believe that this technology could help improve efficiency and help catch small mistakes which can be difficult to catch on a comparatively small screen.
