Designing With Virtual Reality
Towards the end of January, Microsoft released information about their current virtual reality project, the HoloLens. The HoloLens boasts the ability to turn the physical world into a canvas which holograms can be displayed on. The trailer video shows a variety of different applications for this projected hologram technology: video playback, gaming, and most interesting of all, design.
This section of the trailer shows a woman viewing the parts she is working on projected onto the already manufactured motorcycle frame. Seeing parts placed in their correct place in three dimensional space could really alter the way design work is done. I suspect this technology could be very useful for visualizing interference problems in assemblies or how a finished product will look.
The HoloLens is projected to be released concurrently with Windows 10 towards the end of the year.
